The repetition of ‘her’ creates a centralized image of self-entrapment. Culture is an important pointer regarding where an individual possesses a certain identity, for example Changez feels a sense of belonging in the world of commerce, with Underwood Samson. Unanswered questions are commonplace in the novel, leading to assumption and prejudice about the way in which Changez acts. This element of sub-textual activity is prevalent too in Updike’s novel Terrorist. Ahmad, the radical Muslim schoolboy, proves that a level of unexpected underlying emotion exists within multiple characters. He, explicitly advocates a method of life that is ‘clean and pure’, regarding sexual activity and interaction with ‘godless’ Christian Americans. However, it is clear that a perm eation of natural emotion embroils the radical into a state of moral turpitude. The lust narrated exemplifies this dichotomy between religion and humanity, Ahmad takes an interest in Joryleen’s ‘breasts’ and ‘lips’ which are both cultural symbols of sexuality. An intelligent analogy of this disparity between the fullness of one identity and the permeation of a subdued interfering identity is regarding Ahmad’s eye. It reads â€Å"As Ahmad widens his eyes, staring into so much injustice, Jack notices that his irises are not plain black but with a greenish tinge in their brown, a pinch of Mulloy in him.† This description indicates an identity-based imperfection, perhaps proving that there is a range of characters within one identity; it is for the individual to decide which one prevails. Identity in the form of belonging with Erica is an odd case. Erica seems to accept her receding nature and is unchallenged by Changez to re-emerge from the darkness of her misguided acquiescence after the death of Chris. Her identity certainly changes after the event of 9/11, claiming it had ‘churned up old thoughts’. Changez notices a bruise on the ‘top of her rib cage’ which could be read allegorically as a bruise from the scarring events of the terror attack. Erica takes an interest in the isolate nature of islands, Changez observes that the decor and artwork in her ‘penthouse’ resemble islands. He states, â€Å"As we were leaving her room, I noticed a sketch on the wall. It depicted under stormy skies a tropical island with a runway and a steep volcano; nestled in the caldera of a volcano was a lake with another, smaller island in it an island on an island wonderfully sheltered and calm.† The phrases ‘sheltered and calmâ€℠¢ indicate an unhealthy comfort. There are clear struggles within Erica’s mind, whether to move on and develop new relations, or whether to move ‘one step within herself’. Changez fails to intervene which is a criticism of his actions in the novel, after all, she only ignites and accelerates her own downfall as she lacks challenge or check in the way of friendship. This situation recalls that of Ahmad in Terrorist. When thoughts stay in an incubatory fashion, they tend to become overly complex, stressful and dangerous. The mind has an ability to embellish or over exaggerate certain issues, which could lead to more harmful circumstances than if these thoughts were mitigated. Contextually, Ahmad has never met his father, his thoughts of his father are most definitely positive and of demigod-like praise. The father left his family when Ahmad was young, and most importantly was irreligious and secular, the opposite of the sacred Ahmad. Ahmad over years of thought and concern moves to the false conclusion that his father is a man of moral and strength, which in fact is not correct. Ahmad’s mother, Teresa, comically states ‘[Ahmad] has no illusions about his father. I’ve made it very clear to him what a loser his father was’ In fact, Ahmad does of course have these stated illusions and thus it is an interesting concept of s uch thoughtless delusion. Changez, at the culmination of the novel, is involved in a complex moral dichotomy regarding his true identity. In a manner that recalls Camus’ The Fall. Hamid’s inclusion of the culturally external ‘Juan Bautista’ ‘added considerable momentum to [his] inflective journey, a journey that continues to this day.’ Bautista questions ‘plunged [him] into a deep bout of introspection’ which led Changez to evaluate his circumstances in America, disbanding his ‘janissarian’ operations. Opposing the question, often there is a need for another individual to catalyze the thoughts and provoke introspection to discover an identity. The self-comforting nature of the mind perhaps allows substandard values to fester and normalise, which takes another person to deconstruct. Whilst the novel does comply to rushed time constraints at the finale, Changez does act rationally with his morals in a bid to relinquish his ‘focus[sing]on th e fundamentals’. His return and rediscovery of what is important in his life leads him back to the differing land of Pakistan. A large move in terms of culture, but it seems that America had rejected his perceived identity, an identity that once served him an ‘advantage’ in the business arena. Ahmad’s morals do subvert his external facade in the end of the novel when he reconsiders taking the lives of innocent people in the name of Allah. It takes Jack Levy to catalyze this moral reboot and thus again, the fight of a ‘divided man’s conversation with himself’ requires the nature of a stable identity, regardless of their mundanity, to reinvigorate a new, more morally cooperative identity. Levy says ‘Thank God.. You saw the light!’ This light seems to present immorality as darkness and moral courage and strength as a light. Changez and Ahmad certainly do share similarities in their evolution of moral identity. They do also share a similarity of the need for another person to intervene or provoke thoughts within themselves. The fight of mental identity seems to create an element of detachment from society, demonstrated by Erica. Extensively, it seems as if those who lack moral groundings are quick to cling on to any form of stability, such as Changez does in the early days of his residence in New York. 9/11 clearly provokes thoughts and feelings about the good and bad of American society for the protagonists. The way that the immigrant Changez experiences blatant racism as a result of his ‘skin’ seems to prove that perhaps identity is portrayed by others onto him. After reviewing these concepts it becomes clearer in appreciating who I am, and my place in society. I can share my own experiences that have contributed to my social development. Self perception is how one determines their actions of other situations environmentally, persona, and approach. However, the actions assist in giving good wisdom, which reveals the reality of us. In cognitive dissonance this shows how an individual is motivated to retain consistencies with his or her self’s cognition. The theory illustrates an individual who can sense anxiety and a need of synchronization when two ideas are incompatible (Myers, 2011). When an individual tries to validate their actions by defending it, he or she will not be amenable to correcting his or her self; demonstrating that the self is becoming consistent with actions without remembering past values. The theory is similar to the notion of self persuasion, although self perception illustrates why individuals compare his or herself to other individuals (Myers, 2011). Self Concept, Self-Esteem, and Self Efficacy I am viewed in three different aspects of life. The three perspectives explain my behavior on how I see my persona, physical self, self beliefs, and objectives, and exchanges within society. One of the first concepts is self concept. This is how the self sees his or herself in the social world. In present studies of the exact self and opposites of hopelessness are the relationships of self concept. When we are true to ourselves it provides the meaning of life. The way we see ourselves establishes our experiences of social life. I observe myself as a mother, an individual, and a friend. I hold a set of standards by setting goals, and following through with good examples that my children will follow. I rely on my friends and family for advice on adequate behavior as well as dealing with events in my life. I learn from others experiences but also link them to my own version of how situations should be dealt with. We are products of our own environment, and as I become older I expect that I will always love, know, and appreciate myself. The second concept is self-esteem that pertains to our confidence. This concept is more than thinking of one’s self, but a normalcy of our own aptitude. Self-esteem is something we all have; however, some can become the victims to grovel (Buhrmester, Blanton, amp; Swann, 2011). As I think of my self-esteem and reflections of holding my head up, not listening to others hypocritical words, and I am capable of meeting requirements; shows that I am far from perfect. However, I am comfortable with the person I am. Self-esteem is one who’s able to know and recognize who he or she is when the world is cruel and mean. The last concept is self efficacy. Self efficacy is being able to complete task that someone else can do, but he or she can do it better and more quickly. In addition there is acknowledgment of appraisal for a job well done. Self efficacy is also how a person thinks, believes, proceeds and is goaded to complete the task. It is important to the individual how well we execute in comparison to others; if we are competent and can accomplish objectives. Self efficacy is also the ability to take on new task and be successful at that. For example, my ability in obtaining a degree from UOPX to get to my ultimate goal and it contributes to myself concept and self-esteem (Myers, 2011). Social Experiences or Events of Personal Development As I reflect back on my life there were many incidents and many people who influenced me. I have been on my own as of the age of 18 and began my life as a mother at the age of 21. Once I had my first daughter I realized I could define myself and my part in society. I was no longer an individual, just a friend, or daughter. Becoming a mother was to me this life fulfilling prophecy and fueled me to want more out of life. In this stage of my life as a single woman raising a child motivated me to become a better person. My other three girls have led me to the second stage of personal development. I was married, but have separated from my husband. I walk away from that marriage with a total of four daughters, and it has given me the ambition to finish college with a degree in Psychology. This finally will put me in a place where I can do what I enjoy and be successful at the same time. I know who I am and where I want to be. Understanding the Ninth Amendments Effect and History The Ninth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution attempts to ensure that certain rights - while not specifically listed as being granted to the American people in the other sections of the Bill of Rights - should not be violated. The complete text of the Ninth Amendment states: â€Å"The enumeration in the Constitution of certain rights shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.† Over the years, the federal courts have interpreted the Ninth Amendment as confirming the existence of such implied or â€Å"unenumerated† rights outside those expressly protected by the Bill of Rights. Today, the Amendment is often cited in legal attempts to prevent the federal government from expanding the powers of Congress specifically granted to it under Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution. The Ninth Amendment, included as part of the original 12 provisions of the Bill of Rights, was submitted to the states on September 5, 1789, and was ratified on December 15, 1791. Why This Amendment Exists When the then proposed U.S. Constitution was submitted to the states in 1787, it was still strongly opposed by the Anti-Federalist Party, Led by Patrick Henry. One of their main objection to the Constitution as submitted was its omission of a list of rights specifically granted to the people - a â€Å"bill of rights.† However, the Federalist Party, led by James Madison and Thomas Jefferson, contended that it would be impossible for such a bill of rights to list all conceivable rights, and that a partial list would be dangerous because some might claim that because a given right was not specifically listed as protected, the government had the power to limit or even deny it. In an attempt to resolve the debate, the Virginia Ratifying Convention proposed a compromise in the form of a constitutional amendment stating that any future amendments limiting the powers of Congress should not be taken as justification for expanding those powers. This proposal led to the creation of the Ninth Amendment. Practical Effect Of all the amendments in the Bill of Rights, none is stranger or harder to interpret than the Ninth. At the time it was proposed, there was no mechanism by which the Bill of Rights could be enforced. The Supreme Court had not yet established the power to strike down unconstitutional legislation, and it was not widely expected to. The Bill of Rights was, in other words, unenforceable. So what would an enforceable Ninth Amendment look like? Strict Constructionism and the Ninth Amendment There are multiple schools of thought on this issue. Supreme Court justices who belong to the strict constructionist school of interpretation essentially say that the Ninth Amendment is too vague to have any binding authority. They push it aside as a historical curiosity, in much the same way that more modernist justices sometimes push the Second Amendment aside. Implicit Rights At the  Supreme Court level,  most justices do believe that the Ninth Amendment has binding authority, and they use it to protect implicit rights hinted at but not explicated elsewhere in the Constitution. Implicit rights include both the right to privacy outlined in  the landmark 1965 Supreme Court case of  Griswold v. Connecticut, but also basic unspecified rights such as the right to travel and the right to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.   Writing in the Court’s majority opinion Justice William O. Douglas stated that â€Å"specific guarantees in the Bill of Rights have penumbras, formed by emanations from those guarantees that help give them life and substance.† In a lengthy concurrence, Justice Arthur Goldberg added, â€Å"The language and history of the Ninth Amendment reveal that the Framers of the Constitution believed that there are additional fundamental rights, protected from governmental infringement, which exist alongside those fundamental rights specifically mentioned in the first eight constitutional amendments.† Updated by Robert Longley
